Cutting begins with a map, not a saw

A piece of jadeite rough does not arrive with a finished form waiting inside it. The cutter works from limited evidence: exposed color, translucency at a window or sawn face, visible fractures, surface contours and the dimensions of the block. Each observation helps define a possible orientation, but none reveals the whole interior. The first plan is therefore provisional.

Orientation matters because jadeite is rarely visually uniform. A green zone may be concentrated near one face; a translucent area may thin out with depth; a fracture may continue beyond the point where it disappears from view. Turning the rough changes which part of the material will face the viewer and how much thickness remains behind it. This is the same reason a finished jadeite cabochon can show color differently across its dome.

Reading what the rough can—and cannot—show

A window is useful because it replaces weathered skin with a direct view of a small interior area. It can disclose local color, grain and translucency. It cannot prove that those qualities continue through the block. GIA’s account of the Burmese jade trade describes examination, sawing and the uncertainty that remains as material is opened. A photograph narrows the evidence further: exposure, white balance, transmitted light and wet surfaces can all change the impression of color and transparency.

Before committing to a major cut, the cutter weighs several competing aims. One orientation may preserve a larger outline; another may move a fracture away from a critical edge; a third may place the strongest color at the visible surface. “Yield” therefore means more than retained weight. It includes whether the remaining material can support a coherent, durable form. This is why promises about the number or grade of objects hidden in rough are not responsible conclusions from images alone. From opening cut to workable blank

Published workshop accounts describe powered, abrasive cutting rather than a clean cleave along a predictable plane. In the Burmese jade trade documented by GIA, diamond-coated saws are used with water during cutting. The saw removes a kerf—the material consumed by the blade—so every cut has an irreversible cost. Cooling and controlled feed help the cut proceed without treating the rough as if speed were the only objective.

Once an interior surface is visible, the plan may change. A slab can be marked for a bangle ring, smaller cabochon blanks, beads or a carved form. A bangle requires a sufficiently large continuous annulus, while beads can use smaller areas but demand repetition across many units. A carved design may accommodate a contour or color boundary that would look awkward in a plain geometric piece. The decision is not a hierarchy in which one form is always “best”; it is a fit between the material that is actually present and the form it can sustain.

Cut blanks remain unfinished. Sawing establishes broad boundaries; grinding refines outline, thickness and curvature; polishing develops the final reflective surface. Marks from an early stage should not simply be hidden by later shine. Each stage removes material, so an error in alignment becomes progressively harder to correct without changing the intended proportions.

How color changes the cutting decision

Color should be read as a distribution in three dimensions, not as a paint layer on the surface. GIA’s quality guidance distinguishes hue, tone, saturation and distribution when discussing jadeite color. For a cutter, those qualities interact with thickness and orientation. A thin piece may transmit more light yet lose visual concentration; a thicker piece may deepen apparent color while reducing brightness. The correct balance depends on the individual material and intended form.

Uneven color is not automatically evidence of poor cutting. It may be the defining character of the piece. The more useful question is whether the orientation makes the transition deliberate and legible. In a carving, a boundary may become part of the composition; in a cabochon, a misplaced boundary can pull the visual center away from the dome. GIA’s discussion of Chinese jade carving records the long-standing use of uneven color—often called qiaose in carving practice—as a design resource. That historical craft concept should not be mistaken for a guarantee that every color boundary can be used successfully.

Fractures, inclusions and the cost of optimism

Visible fractures affect both layout and risk. A line that crosses the intended edge of a bangle or the girdle of a cabochon may matter differently from an internal feature that remains enclosed. GIA notes that fractures can affect jadeite’s appearance and durability, but a photograph cannot establish their depth or continuity. Responsible planning leaves room for uncertainty instead of assuming that a surface trace ends just beneath the skin.

Internal features are not all equivalent, and their presence does not by itself determine quality. Grain, cloudy areas, color concentrations and fractures require different descriptions. Cutting can reveal them; it does not diagnose treatment or material identity. Those questions belong to gemological examination and, where needed, a laboratory report. What a viewer can inspect after cutting

On a finished piece, look for a relationship between outline, thickness and the material’s visual center. Is the strongest area of color placed where the eye naturally rests? Does a pair of earrings share a convincing orientation? Does a bangle keep an even, intentional profile? Are edges suited to the setting rather than made thin merely to increase apparent translucency?

These observations can reveal thoughtful planning, but they cannot reconstruct the rough or calculate lost yield. Nor can a glossy photograph prove that a surface is free of pits, fine scratches or distortion. Rotate the piece under diffuse neutral light, then check reflected lines across the surface.
