A bangle begins as a demand for continuous material

A jadeite bangle is not assembled from a strip. Its circular body must be extracted from one continuous area of rough, so the planned ring needs enough width, thickness and structural continuity before any hole is opened. The empty center is not leftover design space; it is material that must be removed to create the form.

Planning the ring

After an interior face is exposed, the maker maps possible circles against color, texture and visible fractures. Inner diameter, wall width and overall profile must fit within a single stable zone. Moving the circle slightly may place better color on the visible arc or avoid a fracture; it may also reduce the usable diameter or consume another potential form.

This is a three-dimensional decision. A clean circle drawn on one face says little about what lies through the slab’s depth. The cautions in judging rough from photographs are especially important for bangles because the required annulus extends around a large uninterrupted path.

Outer blank and inner core

The broad outline is first separated from surrounding material. The center is then removed to establish the ring opening, leaving an annular blank. GIA’s field report describes specialized bangle cutting in the jade trade; individual workshops may use different machinery and sequences, so this article does not prescribe a universal tool list.

Opening the center is an irreversible stage. It reveals new material along the inner circumference and may expose a fracture not visible on the slab face. The center piece can sometimes support smaller objects, but its possible use depends on actual size and condition. It should not be counted as guaranteed secondary yield.

Shaping inner and outer curves

The rough annulus must be ground into a wearable profile. The inner curve governs fit and should feel continuous against the hand. The outer curve establishes visual weight and can be rounded, flatter or otherwise shaped according to the design. The two curves must remain related; a local thin spot changes both appearance and structural margin.

Symmetry is checked from more than one view. Face-on, the circle should read coherently; in profile, thickness and curvature should progress deliberately. Hand finishing corrects local transitions, but every correction removes material. A maker cannot endlessly chase perfect geometry without changing size or wall thickness.

Color and fractures travel around the circumference

A bangle shows the material as a continuous circuit. Color can gather on one arc and recede on another; texture and transparency can change as the ring turns. Even distribution is one possible aesthetic, not the only legitimate one. More useful is whether transitions are intelligible and accurately represented.

Fractures require separate attention because a line may cross part of the wall or continue through its thickness. GIA notes that fractures affect appearance and durability. Visual inspection can locate an exposed line, but cannot always establish its full path. Laboratory testing identifies material and treatments; it does not magically map every hidden structural feature.

Polish must follow an unbroken curve

Final abrasive work removes shaping marks and develops the surface. On a bangle, reflection should travel around the outer arc without abrupt flats, and the inner circumference should not retain rough transitions. GIA’s quality guidance associates fine polish with sharp, undistorted reflections and no visible pitting or orange-peel texture.

Inspect under diffuse light while rotating the entire ring. Check outer face, inner wall and both edges. A bright front view alone can hide scratches inside the ring. The polishing guide explains how to use reflected lines rather than brightness alone.

Finished-bangle inspection

Begin with measurements and fit, then study profile, wall consistency, color transitions and disclosed condition. A bangle should not be forced over the hand merely to reach a preferred size. Existing wear, chips or repairs need direct examination. For daily handling, follow jadeite bangle care.

No photograph can reconstruct how much rough was lost or prove that an internal line is harmless. A responsible description distinguishes visible observations from identity, treatment and hidden continuity. The finished ring is evidence of the choices that survived, not a complete record of the block it came from.
