Prong setting

Prongs are narrow metal supports bent over a stone’s edge. The open construction can reveal more surface and side light, but exposed edges and projecting claws need inspection for wear and snagging.

Bezel setting

A bezel uses a thin metal rim around all or part of the perimeter. GIA describes it as an effective way to protect girdle and pavilion areas. It can frame an unusual outline cleanly, though it covers more of the edge.

About “gold wrapping”

“Gold wrapping” is too broad for precise description. Ask whether the piece uses a full bezel, partial bezel, decorative metal surround, closed back or another construction. Metal fineness such as 18K describes alloy proportion, not the setting method.
