A strand is a sequence, not a pile of good beads

Jadeite bead matching asks whether many individually cut objects can read as one composition. A fine bead does not guarantee a coherent strand, and a coherent strand need not erase every natural variation. The work lies in ordering size, shape, color, translucency, texture, drilling and surface finish so that the eye moves without an unintended interruption.

GIA identifies color and texture as the most important matching factors for jadeite beads, with transparency, size and symmetry of cut also considered. It notes that matching becomes more difficult as strands become longer or beads larger. This is a material problem: every additional bead must meet several conditions at once.

Begin with dimensions, then look beyond them

Diameter can be measured, but a nominally equal diameter does not ensure equal appearance. One bead may be slightly oval, another may carry a flattened pole, and a third may have an off-center drill that makes it sit differently on the cord. Roll loose beads on a level surface and view a strung group from the side as well as face-on.

Symmetry should be read as controlled shape, not mathematical perfection at any cost. Removing more material may correct a small deviation but also reduce size or remove a useful color zone. The maker balances regularity against the limited rough, just as in jadeite cutting.

Color matching is about relationship

Compare hue, tone, saturation and distribution rather than using “green” as a single category. Two beads can share a hue while one is markedly darker; another pair may have similar average color but different mottling. Neutral, diffuse light gives a more stable comparison than a spotlight or warm display lamp.

Perfect sameness is not the only valid arrangement. A strand can be graduated intentionally—from lighter to deeper, from smaller to larger, or around a central bead. The standard is whether the sequence looks deliberate. An isolated dark bead in an otherwise even run may feel accidental; the same bead can make sense as a planned center.

Transparency and texture must be read together

A bead can appear more translucent at its edge than through the center because the light path is shorter. Compare equivalent zones and rotate each bead. Fine texture may support a smooth, even appearance, while coarser structure can become more visible under transmitted or grazing light. Neither observation identifies treatment.

Drilling governs how the strand behaves

A drill hole should pass through the bead on an intended axis. Misalignment makes a bead tilt, causing a row to kink even when diameters match. Hole edges should be inspected for chips, roughness and residue. The cord needs enough clearance to move without sawing against a sharp edge, but an oversized hole can make the bead sit loosely.

Drill alignment is easiest to see with beads already strung in a short test sequence. Let the line hang naturally rather than pulling it rigid. Rotation can reveal whether a visual jump comes from color placement, shape or the path of the hole.

Surface finish repeats every imperfection

Because a strand repeats the same geometry, inconsistent polish becomes conspicuous. Follow a reflected line across several adjacent beads. The highlight should move with comparable clarity; one dull or distorted surface may interrupt the rhythm. GIA associates fine jadeite polish with sharp, undistorted reflections and no visible pitting or orange-peel texture.

Check around drill openings, where finishing can be difficult and wear begins. Dust and cord residue can imitate dullness, so clean conservatively before judging. The polishing guide separates surface preparation from simple shine.

Inspect the whole strand and the individual bead

First view the strand at normal distance: does the sequence have a center, a deliberate graduation and a stable fall? Then examine local transitions, followed by each bead’s shape, hole and condition. This order prevents one attractive bead from distracting from a weak sequence—and prevents a coherent strand from hiding a damaged unit.

Matching describes workmanship and selection. It does not prove that every bead is jadeite, untreated or from one piece of rough.
